[00:00:00] What happens if you fall into a whirlpool?
[00:00:04] Whirlpools can suddenly form in rivers or seas, posing a serious threat by dragging people, animals or small boats down to the depths. A whirlpool occurs when fast moving water interacts with currents or other obstacles.
[00:00:22] When water encounters resistance, it begins to spin downward, creating a vortex that can suck in nearby objects or creatures.
[00:00:32] Some whirlpools are small and short lived, while others can be massive and driven by continuous currents.
[00:00:40] The most dangerous type of whirlpool is a strong maelstrom found in the ocean or rivers.
[00:00:47] The opposing currents can pull small objects, people and even boats into their center, where the force of the water drags them downward.
[00:00:58] Once submerged, the situation can be extremely perilous, as the swirling motion may disorient the person and trap them underwater without access to air.
[00:01:10] When I realized I was caught in a whirlpool, my first instinct was to try swimming out of it, but it was useless, said Stuart Fowlstone, who once fell into a whirlpool in an interview with the Guardian.
[00:01:25] Later, I reviewed the footage captured by the GoPro attached to my helmet. It showed that I was underwater for nearly three and a half minutes. I must have been pulled down close to the riverbed, where the whirlpool's force diminished and eventually vanished. A kayaker found me floating face down and pulled me out. The depth to which a whirlpool can pull a person depends on its size and strength, but not everyone is able to escape.
[00:01:55] When a person drowns, their body typically sinks, but then rises to the surface later due to the gases released during decomposition.
[00:02:05] Whirlpools can form in several ways, but most often they result from the collision of opposing currents that spin around each other or when a current meets an obstacle.
[00:02:16] Another cause is the sudden formation of a sinkhole created by the collapse of an underwater cave. This process floods the empty structure, creating a whirlpool similar to the one formed when you pull the plug from a filled sink.
[00:02:32] Because whirlpools can form in various ways, they may sometimes appear without warning, though certain locations are notorious for whirlpools due to the currents flowing through the area.
